Major road closure in Rossendale extended into the New Year

A major road closure in Rossendale has taken an unwelcome leap into the New Year, testing the patience of locals who have already spent months navigating diversions and delays. Deardengate in Haslingden was meant to return to normal much sooner, but the barriers will now remain in place until 30 January, leaving residents wondering what on earth is going on beneath the road surface.

Longer disruption hits Rossendale

The extended closure, introduced by Lancashire County Council back in mid-June, was initially described as a temporary measure to keep people safe while essential works were carried out. Now, that “temporary” label feels rather optimistic. With the order renewed under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the council retains the power to keep traffic out for as long as safety or engineering work requires.

Exactly what’s causing the delay remains irritatingly unclear. However, such closures usually mean substantial works, such as structural repairs, upgrading utilities, or groundwork that simply can’t be done with traffic and pedestrians coming through. As annoying as the diversion may be, these interventions tend to head off the sort of long-term troubles that come from neglected roads or outdated utilities.

How residents can stay informed

Local people have plenty of questions, and quite right too. A months-long closure on a key Haslingden road affects everyone, from commuters making their way down the valley to shopkeepers who’ve seen trade fall away. For now, the council is advising residents to check the Lancashire Telegraph’s Public Notice Portal, where updates and official statements are posted for anyone keen to keep up to date.

The order itself carries the reference HRiT/50541/HB, a bureaucratic tag, certainly, but a useful one for tracking developments as January draws nearer. While the situation is anything but ideal, it does highlight the never-ending balancing act involved in keeping Rossendale’s roads in good nick: short-term upheaval for the sake of long-term safety, reliability, and a smoother drive once the barriers are finally lifted.
